Common Grounds' new coffee house in the Zandale neighborhood opened three weeks ago — but not for long.
Frozen pipes quickly shut down the store, which features coffee and limited food offerings, including breakfast sandwiches, and has a drive-through.
The store, at 2200 Nicholasville Road, will reopen Thursday. It's the second store under the Common Grounds name.
Owner Lori McCreary said she had been looking for two years for a place that could support a drive-through. It was difficult to find a spot in the Richmond Road/Hamburg corridor, she said, but the Zandale area on Nicholasville Road yielded the right location.
"The food will be something we will build up to" at the Zandale store, and customer input will be sought, she said. "We're seeing what the crowd wants before we put it in there."
The original Common Grounds, at 343 East High Street, opened in 1992 near the beginning of the 1990s coffee-house culture — and 10 years before Starbucks came to Lexington. It offers a breakfast and lunch menu and is known for its open-mike nights every Monday.
